A Reciever?

The Ceremonies

December has come, and the Ceremonies have to. Kids from one to twelve have their own special Ceremonie, and Jonas is now facing the last one. In the Ceremonie of twelve kids are now considered adults, and they get their assignments (jobs). Jonas has been esoecting this moment, with fear. His worst nightmare is that something goes wrong while in his Ceremony. And guess what, he guets skipped. In front of all of his community, he passes thrugh a lot of shame. But after all of the other kids of his age recieve his assignment, the chief elder names his the succesor of the Reciever. Its like, one of the most important assignments, EVER.

Quotes That Grabbed my Attention

"But today we honor your differences".  The community doesnt like to point out differences becauses it might cause trouble, but that doesnt mean there arent differences. If there were no differences, then how could there be different assignments. And by honoring differences, they mean that they are important.
"Asher - She said- Thank you for your childhood". Well.... that is weird. Does she mean that Ashers childhood is being taken away? People are kind of possesions for the government. The government really controll who they are, and they can take away quialitues from them.

Final Thoughts....

Jonas being the reciever, well I expected that, I mean, he is the protagonist. But what really grabbed my attention in these chapters is how poeple are treated. They cant choose their assignments, and they are treated like objects. I think that even though these rules may make the community run smoothly, people really DONT know what life really is. All their decisions are made by other people, in other words, theur life is made by other people.

Beggining In a ¨Perfect¨ Community

In the Story...

The ¨Community¨ as they call it, seems like a perfect place for Jonas and his family. But EVERYTHING is literally controlled. In this perfect world, you cant have a family by birth, the only way is by asking for one by doing an application. Children have lots of limitations, and depending on their age, those limitations start to change. But not only that, you cant chose what you will work on, everything in your life is planned, even your name is already chosen. Even though these rules seem to keep order, what they really do is take your freedom away.

Quotes From the Book

"Like animals. Neither child knew what the word meant exactly." This community is really different from ours. People don't even know what animals are, that means they have never left their community. These rules are made so that they dont know danger, because there IS no danger, that is why they doesnt fell fear. Another quote that brings my attention is "It was considered rude to call attention to things that were unsettling or different about individuals".  They try to prevent problems like racism or bullying by punishing people who point out differents. In this way nobody feels superior to nobody.

Final Thoughts

I think that even though these rules seem to take away a lot of freedom, what they really make isnt that bad. In our world we have problems like war, discrimination, and we also have lots of dangerous things. The community in which Jonas lives have rules that make all of this problems not to happen.
You need to do some sacrifice for solving things like this, is freedom worth it?

Control of Governments

Government and Its Control

Even though the government should have some control over its citizens, it should not be absolute control. Citizens should be free, and the cant have any rights restricted from them. However, that does not mean there should be rules. If there are no laws, communities would have no order and they would be chaotic. There should be democracy, because if rules are chosen by leaders and not citizens, some citizens may not follow them.

Is Truman Free?

Take for example The Truman Show. The government (Christof) has too much control over its citizens (Truman). Trumans life is planned since he is born until his death. Just imagine being in a world that has no danger, no harm, but not freedom. As soon as Truman realizes that he really cant make any choices, he decides to escape. There is no ¨fun¨ living in a world like that

Final Thoughts

But how would Trumans life would have been if there were no rules. He would have probably died now. He drives like crazy, drives through fire, even sail a ship into a storm the size of the entire ocean, how would he not die? So maybe having someone controling him wasnt as bad as he thought. As my final opinion, I believe that rules are needed, but freedom is too.
